The Butterfly Pendant

I had shared this idea to weave in a wire butterfly in a sea glass pendant. And Divya from Jewels of Sayuri suggested an option for the frame, which I used but skipped the prongs and tied the butterfly to the base with twisted wire instead.

I made a circle from 1 mm wire, leaving the two ends for the bail. The circle should be smaller than the piece of glass.  I attached the wings to the circle with twisted thin wire. Now that I had a frame to hold the glass, I used thinner wire for the base - 0.6 mm (22 ga) and 0.3 mm (28 ga) for weaving.

I had intended to write a detailed description of my process, but, it turned out, I could not rely on my inspiration (again!). It all started late one night and taking pictures was not an option - I grabbed the idea and started weaving. It was after midnight, when my inspiration yawned and disappeared but it kept coming back almost every other day. Yes, a pendant may take days to make! So I'll share some basics with you. I started weaving 4 pieces in the middle (each one was 25-30 cm long or 10-12 in), then I parted them 2x2 at the wing connection points. I continued working on the two upper pieces and made some twists that resembled the dots butterflies have on their wings. In order to strengthen the frame, I twisted the two upper and two lower wire pieces on both sides of the pendant into, quite unexpectedly, wire roses - it was a spur-of-the-moment idea.

I needed to take care of two more things. First, I had chosen crystals that were too pale. They sparkled all right but mostly they were invisible. The second was about the bail. So I went through my supplies and found some dark brown crystals and dark gold colored spacers. And this cluster was born under the bail that introduced some contrast. For the same reason, I did not weave the bail - to keep the original color. I twisted the numerous wire ends around the bail and - voila!

    1. Well, thanks to you :) I skipped the prongs because I thought they would be more difficult to make for this irregular piece of glass. A frame with prongs would be very handy for holding the whole piece together, I will only have to think how to blend it into the design.

  2. Simply wonderful! I know how it is when working late and not being able to take pictures!

    1. Thank you, Pearl! I have a light box but recently replaced the lights (after one of them burned) with energy saving ones that supposedly deliver more light - well, it's not quite true, they make terrible shadows. And with the winter season coming, daylight is not very reliable :)
