Experimenting with Oxidation and Polishing

When I was little, I liked to disassemble and assemble broken stove switches. Growing up, I had to learn to repair old type fuses and replace cable plugs. That was all my voluntаry relationship with anything technical. Now I have to use tools for my hobby! And you're about to find out what does all this have to do with the sea glass pendant below that may look similar to all the others I've made but the truth is much more complex... and will take time to tell, so be patient.

I bought some electric cable and stripped it in order to experiment with oxidation of pure copper wire. This type of stripping pliers was more comfortable to use and I finally managed to strip a long piece without bending or scratching it. I used it as the basic wire and for the weaving, I used thin jewelry wire that was coated.

Oxidation - here is one of the sources I came across. I cut the upper part of a plastic bottle, put some paper towels on the bottom, made two holes from both sides and pushed a piece of wire through them to hang the pendant, poured 25 ml of ammonia solution and covered with aluminum foil. I left it overnight and in the morning parts of the wire had turned black. When I came back from work, all the stripped wire was dark black but the weaving wire was the same bright orange color. Оn the second day, it was much darker in spite of the coating and only the bail remained a bit brighter. *Note to self: next time I need to use a better insulated vessel for the oxidation and maybe a steel brush to take off the coating of the jewelry wire.

Scrubbing and polishing (using a Dremel) : I started with the abrasive buff (I'm not sure what grit) but next time I will try the steel brush - the buff produced a lot of particles flying around. The purpose is to clean the dark oxidation and uncover some shiny details. I tried with sandpaper before that but it was rather inefficient. The pendant ended up with a dull matte finish and had to be polished with a polishing wheel and paste to regain its shine. Alas, I had forgotten to buy the paste. A quick search on the internet revealed that I just might have the necessary ingredients to DIY it with beeswax and olive oil. Here is how - mine came out a bit hard, I guess because I eye-balled the olive oil and did not comply with the 50/50 ratio. So when I used it for the final polishing, some of the paste remained in the crevices of the wire weaving and I had to clean it with a toothbrush and detergent. But it worked and I'm so proud!

  1. thanks for sharing your process. With all the technological advances in Electrical engineering it becomes difficult to find real copper wire without any coating on it as is in the market. but certain sites like parawire sell it. have you tried LOS solution for patina? Its quick (5-10 minutes) and pain free and you can use polishing pads to create a nice shine afterwards. Thanks for sharing the polishing wheel link, I'll get to know how to use that attachment as I am quite skeptical of using it

    1. I hoped the copper from the stripped cable would be real, at least it reacted to oxidation very fast. It was 7.5 mm but I can't find thin single copper wire for the weaving and it's a pain to retrieve it from multi-wire cables. I haven't tried LOS, decided to go with household medium for the first trials. And I'll have to check if I can find any polishing pads in Bulgaria (they are impregnated with polishing medium, right?).

  2. Looks like your experiments and trials were a success. It sounds like you had some bumps in the process, but I'm sure your next attempts will be even better! Congrats on a beautiful piece!!
